Although Sean Hands and Robbie Callister (twice) have subsequently bettered his time, in 2003 it was more than 30 minutes faster than anyone had walked in the past 24 years and it moved Graham Young down to third fastest of all time.
He was just 5 minutes 18 seconds away from the record at the time and he left Robbie Callister, the winner of the previous two events, more than 38 minutes in arrears. Defying conventional wisdom to maintain a steady pace throughout, Peter's fast time was achieved with his own unique tactics. At times he strolled up the hills, at other times he walked almost flat out.
Peter achieved massive recognition in the Isle of Man for his determined efforts to make the 50km walk in both the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games. One of the walks in Eastern Europe was followed almost live at www.manxathletics.com by means of text messages and the forum.
Peter has been a great all round athlete including being the first Manx athlete in the London Marathon and Manx Mountain Marathon. Aged 45 he still has ambitions at 50km walking but if motivated to try could surely improve his Parish Walk time in the next five years.
