THE PARISH WALK TOP 10

NUMBER 6 GRAHAM YOUNG

Graham Young could have been the greatest Parish Walker ever.

He took part in the 1960 walk aged just 15. Four years later he completed the full course - the second youngest person ever to do so. He moved on.

After numerous successes, but frustrated at not making the 1970 Commonwealth Games, he returned to the Parish Walk in 1971 and broke the record when he beat Derek Harrison by just 54 seconds. He moved on.

He finished 4th in the 1974 Commonwealth Games and became the second fastest British walker ever at 100km (among other achievements). Although he entered the Parish Walk "for training" he did not attempt the full distance again until 1992 (21 years after his previous win). He won in 16:38:27. He moved on.

I'm sure that Graham Young has no regrets that he competed so little in the Parish Walk as he has a fantastic athletics CV.  Its a difficult call but I have placed him 6th in the all time great Parish Walkers, ahead of Peter Kaneen with a faster time, because of his tenacity at winning that 1971 race and winning again 21 years later. No one else has won the walk more than 10 years apart from a previous victory.
