THE PARISH WALK TOP 10 NUMBER 5 DEREK HARRISON
Derek Harrison didn't complete the Parish Walk until 1970 when he was aged 35. The following year he was involved in what was probably the most exciting race ever when he finished just 54 seconds behind Graham Young who set a record of 15:43:12. Derek won comfortably in 1972 and 1973. In 1974 he settled for the veteran's title to Peel and did not return to the Parish Walk until 1979. In between those dates Derek won numerous long distance road and track walks in the UK and Europe. His peak was between 1976 and 1978. On 21 May 1978 he walked 219.570km (more than 135 miles) in 24 hours. Even though his performances were starting to tail off a little by 1979 he broke the record in the Parish Walk, the first to include a commercial sponsor, Mylchreests Motors. He won the race twice more in 1980 and 1984 and then defied all odds to complete his final lap aged 71 in 2006 despite suffering an awful stroke in the intervening years. 2006 was the year he finally lost his record.
