THE PARISH WALK TOP 10

NUMBER 10 HENRY HARVEY

To leave out these three winners with faster times then Henry Harvey must have been special:

Albert Johnson 15:54:51 1967
Richard Brown 15:59:44 1998
Leece Kneale 16:05:52 1968

He was. Henry Harvey finished the first Parish Walk in the modern era in third place. He then set record times on three separate occasions. Only four other athletes have broken the record in the 42 years that followed, ie Albert Johnson, Graham Young, Derek Harrison and Sean Hands.

Just as it is hard to compare women's times with men's, it is also hard to compare current times (with better roads, shoes and sports science) with the early days of the modern Parish Walk. I'm sure, however, that if Henry Harvey was a young man now, he would be competing with the best of this era. He is pictured above at the launch of Dermot O'Toole's book "A Walk Through Time" in 2005 sitting between Stan Cleator and his brother James who both beat him in the 1960 Parish Walk.
